Dawei Mont Di (Mont Lat Thote)

Dawei Mont Di (Mont Lat Thote) is a traditional food of Dawei. Mont Lat Thote is the most popular dish in Dawei traditional foods. It tastes sour because it’s made with Pa Ohn Yi (fermented palm juice). All old and young people in Dawei like Mote Lat Thote.

Mote Lat Thote is food, in which rice noodles are mixed with soup made with Fish.

Ingredients for Soup

  1. Fish (any choice of fish get from the sea e.g Nga Daung Chin is mostly used)
  2. Onion
  3. Lemongrass
  4. Turmeric Powder
  5. Fish Sauce
  6. Pa Ohn Yi (fermented palm juice)

The way of cooking soup for Mont Lat Thote is simple. Firstly, boil fish with a pinch of salt, turmeric powder, and Pa Ohn Yi. Remove the fish from the pan and when cool enough to handle, flake the flesh, discarding any bones. Need to cut onions into 4 pieces. And press lemongrass with Knife.

In a soup pot, prepared lemongrass, fish sauce, Pa Ohn Yi, and a pinch of turmeric with water and boil. After putting the fish, let the soup boil for about 5 mins. And add onion. After a minute it’s ready to eat.

To serve, put a handful of rice noodles in a bowl and the soup. It is garnished with coriander, chopped onion, green onion, bean sprout, chili flakes, and Mote Khway (Sakalay Khway). If you like sourer you can add lime juice.

At the beginning of a healthy recovery, a sour, spicy, and hot soup is best for mouth-watering. Some people use tamarind juice to cook the soup instead of Pa Ohn Yi.
